What We’ve Been Building at Mad World 42

It’s been a while since our last post—and for good reason.

We’ve been heads-down building two core projects that sit at the heart of what Mad World 42 is all about: making practical preparedness tools that still work when the normal systems don’t. The last stretch of development has gone into Routes Less Traveled (our route planning web app) and the Survival Vault (our offline knowledge and mapping library). Here’s where things stand, and what’s coming next.

Routes Less Traveled: Route Planning for the Real World

Routes Less Traveled is designed to help you plan routes with the details that actually matter. Whether you’re mapping an adventure trip, planning a long-distance relocation, or building a contingency route you’d rather never need, this app has you covered.

Routes Less Traveled

Right now, the app lets you:

  • Plan routes anywhere in the United States.

  • Add planned stops along the way.

  • Calculate refueling needs so you’re not guessing mid-trip.

  • Use familiar map context like elevation and aerial imagery to better understand terrain and surroundings.

Where we’re pushing beyond typical route planners is in the extra context that helps you think through conditions, not just distance:

  • Daily traffic patterns.

  • Existing light levels to assess how “lit up” an area is at night. This is often a helpful indicator when you’re thinking about activity and density.

Those aren’t the only layers in the system—but they are two of our key differentiators versus most route tools on the market.

We’re also building outputs that aren’t trapped inside the app. In progress (and coming soon), you’ll be able to export and use routes as:

  • A route you can send to your phone mapping apps.

  • A GPX file for GPS devices.

  • A printable Route Card using military-style standards. Because paper still works when batteries don’t.

The Survival Vault: Offline Knowledge That Doesn’t Disappear

The Survival Vault is our answer to a simple problem: In the moment you need information most, you often can’t access it. We’re building a vault of offline documents and offline mapping resources focused on survival realities. These are especially the topics people tend to scramble for when it’s already too late:

  • Health

  • Food

  • Medical

  • Botanical / plant identification

  • Basic survival techniques and field reference

  • And many others

The core of the vault includes:

  • All USGS digital quarter quadrangles for real topographic navigation, printable and portable.

  • OpenStreetMap Data Files for Offline Access.

  • Wikipedia (offline).

  • USDA Plant information.

But the “secret sauce” is the way it ties together.

The Survival Vault

At the center is a database that cross-references latitude/longitude to everything—maps, place names, and local information. And importantly: If you don’t have GPS, you can still get close.

You can approximate your position using topographic features, place names, and geographic features. Then, you can jump directly into the right offline map sheets and related local references. It’s not magic. It’s just building a system that assumes failure—and still works anyway.

About AI: We’re Testing Before We Trust

We’re also looking hard at AI for offline use. The internet is full of excitement around “SHTF AI” and offline models, but we’re taking a very practical stance: If it can’t perform reliably, it’s not an asset—it’s a distraction.

So far, we haven’t been impressed with what’s realistically accessible in an offline context. At this stage of technological development, a lot of it feels like wasted time unless it’s proven. That’s why we’re building a test bed: a benchmarking system designed specifically to assess offline AI models against standardized benchmarks geared toward SHTF and survival applications.

Not hype. Not vibes. Measurable performance.

If an offline model can earn a place in the vault, it’ll be because it proved it belongs there.

2026 Is Going to Be a Big Year

We’re excited for 2026—and we’re building with the intention to ship, publish, and expand. If you’ve been waiting to see what Mad World 42 becomes, this is the start of the next chapter.
